My ethics // My practice

I believe an ethical counsellor is an empathic counsellor- one that listens, empowers and values you as an individual who has had a complicated and interesting journey through the world.

Identity to some isn't everything, but for those who wish to understand my cultural background I am a heterosexual white male. I believe in the power of empathic understanding for another, that despite differences- both cultural, personal and in our experiences- there is clear space for understanding and judgement-free connection.

That is not to say that I am perfect and not capable of making mistakes. But I strive to make the space as accessible and respectful as possible, while also continuing my own learning and development.

There will be situations where you might disclose something to me that worries me about your well being, such as clear intention to take your own life or harm another person. In the assessment appointment we would agree a counselling contract, and processes will be agreed and put in place to support you emotionally and see what I can to to safeguard and protect you.

As I mentioned before, I am a member of the BACP and have insurance to practice as a private counsellor. Any issues you have with me during sessions together I appreciate the feedback- it helps me to grow and learn. You are also well within your rights with myself or other counsellors, to file formal complaints with the BACP. For more information about them, click here to go to their website.

I have a 24 hour cancelation on appointments, which means that if you cancel our appointments with less than 24 hours notice, you will be asked to pay the full amount of the session. Circumstances can sometimes get out of our control, and in some situations I might wavier the fee.

You and your data are safe

At South City Healing, I take the management and storage of case notes seriously as per GDPR. As per guidance from the Information Commisioner's Office (ICO) and the previously mentioned BACP, I am required to record notes from sessions, these do not, however contain specific or identifying detail. These notes are also for my own development and reflection, I have monthly supervision and use this opportunity to grow and learn from my work.

I also for clients might ask permission to record sessions so I can reflect on my process as a counsellor even deeper. This is completely optional for you.
